Description:
The manufacturing of cell phones has a hidden, violent cost. The minerals essential to making them originate in mines in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The demand from the West fuels a civil war, considered by human rights groups to be the deadliest since World War II. Over the past 15 years, the conflict has resulted in over 5 million deaths and 300,000 reported cases of rape. The war persists as long as armed groups profit from mineral sales. "Blood in the Mobile" reveals the link between our phones and the Congo's civil war. Director Frank Poulsen journeys to the DRC to investigate the illegal mining industry firsthand. He gains access to the country's largest tin mine, controlled by armed factions, where children labor for days in dangerous tunnels to extract minerals used in our mobile devices.
