Description:
A week after the 9/11 attacks, independent filmmakers Jay Rosenblatt and Caveh Zahedi launched a project inviting contributions from over 150 experimental and documentary filmmakers to create a collective film about the tragic events and their impact. My five-minute piece, "Innocence and Despair," allowed me to create my first digital video, using both archival and personal 16mm footage, and to produce a public work for the first time. The title is taken from a favorite album by The Langley Schools Music Project, originally recorded in 1976-77 by Hans Fenger with his students singing popular songs. I was exploring themes of before and after, considering how the people in my film could never have foreseen the world they would be looking at on that day. —Phil Solomon
