A World Apart (2001)

World War II divided Latvia. Many Latvians fled Soviet control and sought refuge in the West, settling in New York City's Hell's Kitchen. This area became the center for Latvian cultural exiles, particularly young poets and artists. Over fifty years, the film follows these individuals – Gunars Silins (the Troubadour), Janis Kreslins (the Internal Dissident), Robert Muks (the Philosopher Dionisios), Rita Gale (the Estranged One), Aina Kraujiete (the Observer), and Dzintars Sodums (the Outsider) – as they navigate the intersection of Latvian and American cultures, striving to blend global trends with their ethnic identity.
