Kinderjaren (2006)

In the summer of 2005, Piet Oomes travels to Sumatra with his mother Ank and aunt Guus to find the Japanese concentration camps where they were interned with their mother during World War II. The journey reveals Piet's personal quest to understand his complicated relationship with his mother, marked by decades of unspoken tension. As they search for answers in the past, emotional clashes erupt between mother and son, while his aunt is overcome with tears. Their visit to the site of the final camp, now a rubber plantation, ultimately leads to a long-overdue understanding, though even then, emotions remain restrained.
