Description:
The Altered States video is divided into four sections. It begins with vintage rock from Jefferson Airplane, accompanied by McKay’s early 1960s sensory-rich style. The 1970s section features a quirky soundtrack by Knox Bronson, an electronic music pioneer, alongside abstract scenes of McKay's travels. The 1980s section presents pure geometric and colorful abstractions, underscored by an uplifting electronic and acoustic score by Dean Evenson. McKay’s 1990s section explores fantastical liquid color landscapes with a dark electronic music composition created by Greg Jalbert in collaboration with McKay. The video documents McKay's primary installation piece from a retrospective of his work spanning four decades, held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from February to May 1999.
