The Ring of the Nibelung: The Valkyrie (2016)

The 2013 Bayreuth production of Wagner's Ring Cycle featured stunning sets designed by Aleksandar Denić. Continuing a hallmark of Frank Castorf's work, the performance incorporates live video recordings to enhance the experience. In this version of Die Walküre, the story begins in 19th-century Baku, Azerbaijan, and progresses to the Stalin era. This setting allows Castorf to critique both Western capitalism and Soviet communism. The principal roles are performed by a strong cast including Christopher Ventris, Heidi Melton, Catherine Foster, and John Lundgren.
