Description:

With the governor's race in disarray, both parties unexpectedly nominate Zachary Hicks. Kay Russell proposes hiring Hal Blake as campaign manager, but first they must free him from jail for unpaid alimony. Blake streamlines the campaign and trains Hicks to deflect questions with a consistent "Well yes, but then again no." The strategy is to portray Hicks as simple but trustworthy. Russell rejects Blake's advances, while Joe protects Blake from unwanted attention. Blake prepares Hicks with a speech by Lincoln. During the debate, when the conservative candidate recites the same speech, Blake exposes him as a plagiarist. Hicks is then strategically presented for publicity, answering every question – including his chances of winning – with his signature "yes, but then again no."
