A Voyage of Discovery to Tarakan (2002)

Karel Doing retraces the journey of his uncle Ed Huis in 't Veld, who was executed by Japanese forces in 1942 on the Indonesian island of Tarakan. This personal travelogue follows Doing's visits to the harbors where ships traveling to the Dutch East Indies (Amsterdam, Genoa, Port Said) made stops, and includes filming in Jakarta, Surabaya, Borneo, and Tarakan. The film blends excerpts from his uncle’s letters, archival footage from the Eye Filmmuseum, and the director’s own diary.
