In September 2019, the largest Arctic expedition ever undertaken sets sail aboard the German icebreaker "Polarstern" for the North Pole. A team of leading scientists collects vital data on the ocean, ice, atmosphere, and life to study climate change and its global effects. This documentary offers unprecedented close-ups of the MOSAiC expedition, led by the Alfred Wegener Institute and the Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). It reveals the Arctic during polar night – a world previously unseen in detail. The film chronicles the scientific, logistical, and personal challenges faced by researchers and crew who intentionally become frozen in the ice desert near the North Pole for a year, using the natural drift of the ice to capture stunning images for the world.
