Description:
As Sigurd Helmer is being prepared for his ordination as bishop, the zealous Tornkvist observes from the sidelines. Shortly after the ceremony, Tornkvist reports Helmer to the police, claiming evidence of a stolen appointment secured through anonymous letters that attacked him during the competition for the bishopric. At the celebratory banquet held at the bishop's residence, Tornkvist publicly reveals his accusation, causing widespread chaos. He also announces his engagement to Helmer's daughter, throwing the banquet into disarray. Only Helmer's wife maintains faith in his innocence. Helmer is subsequently put on trial, accused by Tornkvist. Based on Axel Kielland's 1955 play.
