Between 1912 and 1913, filmmaker Gaston Méliès, brother of Georges Méliès, embarked on a ten-month journey across Asia-Pacific. He filmed documentaries and fictional stories on location in Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Java, Singapore, Cambodia, and Japan. Méliès sought authentic footage, filming with local people and pioneering representation for Polynesians, Maoris, Aborigines, and Khmers in cinema. His unique filmmaking explored themes of difference, identity, and how people are portrayed.
