Initially, the search was straightforward: I needed a young man of African descent, 16 to 18 years old, to play Alberto in the film I'd written. Since they weren't actors, I asked candidates to share a story of their own choosing. Their responses were filled with such life, generosity, and genuine feeling that I found myself deeply affected. Would I be able to capture that same strength, that same emotion, in the film? – Inês de Medeiros
