More than just the father of Hong Kong cinema, Lai was a pioneer of Chinese cinema. He created Hong Kong's first short fiction film, "Zhuangzi Tests His Wife," and established the first Chinese-owned cinema, New World Cinema, in Hong Kong. For decades, he invested his life and wealth in shaping the early days of Chinese film, introducing new technologies and techniques to the industry.
