Street Life follows the lives of Chinese migrants in Shanghai, a major global city representing China's growing economic power. The film focuses on Nanjing Road, a historic commercial street now frequented by tourists and wealthy locals. However, the street has also become a gathering place for displaced and impoverished Chinese people who survive by collecting discarded items. The film centers on these individuals and their experiences, particularly a migrant known as "Black Skin." Black Skin confronts considerable hardship throughout the film, including police brutality. Ultimately, these pressures overwhelm him, leading to mental breakdown. His story intertwines with those of other scavengers, opportunistic thieves, and an abandoned child.
