Description:
Martin Kaas, a horse-loving landowner, lives at Næsbygård with his grandson, also named Martin. While visiting the village blacksmith Mortensen to repair a horse shoe, Martin meets Mortensen's foster daughter, Elise. Though respected for his honesty and faith, Mortensen hides a cruel nature known only to Elise. She uncovers a network of dishonest dealings involving Mortensen and the estate manager, Hermansen, that harm Næsbygård. Finding companionship, Martin develops a close friendship with Elise. Then, Martin vanishes, leaving behind a note revealing he's been kidnapped, and his return depends on a substantial ransom.
