Description:
For years, Chisso Chemical Corporation polluted a small Japanese fishing village by dumping industrial waste containing high levels of methylmercury into the ocean. This toxic chemical accumulated in the local fish, causing mercury poisoning among the villagers. In 1977, the criteria for diagnosing Minamata disease were established in a way that largely ignored the needs of those affected. However, an Osaka court ruled in favor of some patients based on new medical evidence. For decades, these individuals fought for compensation within the Japanese legal system as victims of environmental disease. Director Hara has documented these struggles over the past 15 years, inspired by the earlier documentary *Minamata: The Victims and Their World* (1971) by the late director Tsuchimoto.
