This documentary details the first 24 hours after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, based on post-explosion investigations. The uranium bomb, weighing 140 pounds, instantly devastated the city center, killing 70,000 people. Three days later, a second bomb on Nagasaki caused another 40,000 deaths. For ten weeks, the Army studied the explosion's effects, particularly the thermal flash. Analysis of atomic shadows revealed the bomb detonated just a few hundred yards off target, causing widespread damage for three miles in all directions and severe burns. Information about radiation poisoning was scarce at the time. Scientists continue to study the long-term effects, currently examining 120,000 Hiroshima survivors.
