Animals seem capable of actively seeking natural remedies for illness or prevention. Primatologist Michael Huffman recounts his discovery of chimpanzees using medicinal plants to heal. He also explores other surprising examples: birds using fragrant plants to disinfect nests, a rodent coating itself in toxic sap for defense, and elephants applying mud to wounds. Some of these healing behaviors may even be learned and passed down within groups.
