Description:
In June 1945, Yamauchi Fusako travels to Manchuria to find her husband, Setsuo, a second lieutenant in the Kwantung Army. At the time, 200,000 Japanese settlers had established communities in the Japanese-occupied territory. While Fujita Hideo's family works to cultivate the land, the Soviets prepare for an invasion from the north. Fusako is safely reunited with Setsuo at the Kwantung Army's Fifth Training Squadron headquarters in Dahushan. Although Setsuo cherishes his wife, he instructs young soldiers destined for suicide missions and questions whether he should have allowed her to come. He shares his conflicted feelings with his commanding officer, first lieutenant Michiba Kazuo, who worries about Setsuo’s desire to enjoy his marriage before the impending conflict. Fusako learns about life in Manchuria from Michiba’s wife, Etsu.
