Description:
The Ainu are the native people of Japan, and Hokkaido, the country's northern island, was once called Ainumosir, meaning "land of the Ainu." Ainu traditions are now in serious decline; recent estimates show fewer than 20,000 Ainu people remain in Hokkaido, and UNESCO classifies their language as critically endangered. This documentary was filmed in Biratori town, a region with a strong Ainu heritage and the hometown of Shigeru Kayano, a prominent researcher of Ainu culture.
