Mademoiselle Else (2010)

"Mademoiselle Else" is a film adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's novel "Fräulein Else." It tells the story of a young woman from a privileged background who, while on vacation in the Alps, must beg an art dealer named Dorsday for money to help her father, a lawyer deeply in debt. Dorsday agrees to provide the funds in exchange for being allowed to view her nude body. Interspersed with scenes filmed in the Alps, which allow Else to emotionally detach from the main story, are scenes shot in a dark studio that reflects her inner turmoil. These contrasting locations highlight the different facets of Else's experience as she grapples with her situation. Ultimately, Schnitzler uses Else's perspective on sexuality to critique the ideals of liberalism.
