Born Slave (2003)

"Born Slave" is the first film to document slavery in Mauritania. Swedish filmmakers secretly filmed the practice by posing as tourists, revealing that Mauritania is the only country where slavery still exists. There, people are owned by masters and forced to work without pay, with children separated from their mothers at a young age to be raised as slaves. The film has been screened globally, including in South Africa and at universities and communities in Washington, D.C., where it caused a stir, leading to a confrontation with agents from the Mauritanian embassy. Amnesty International uses the film in its advocacy work.
