Sex, Drugs and Democracy (1994)

This documentary explores the Dutch approach to a free society, which includes legalized sex work, open sale of marijuana, equality for LGBTQ+ individuals, harm reduction programs for addicts, and government-funded abortion, euthanasia, and sex education. Contrary to stereotypes, this unconventional approach has not led to societal decay. The Netherlands boasts remarkably low rates of drug use, addiction, and AIDS transmission, alongside the lowest rates of abortion, teenage pregnancy, and imprisonment globally. Filmed over several months, the documentary features interviews with a diverse range of people – government officials, law enforcement, religious leaders, scientists, as well as those working in the sex industry, drug trade, and nightlife – and captures scenes from various locations including hash bars, brothels, nightclubs, prisons, and public demonstrations.
