Description:
Beijing, 1902. A driven young portrait photographer, Liu Jinglun, embraces new technology and befriends a visiting Englishman who brings a projector, camera, and Lumière brothers' films to open the Shadow Magic theater. Liu’s collaboration with Wallace creates tension with traditional values and his father's expectations, further complicated by his growing affection for Ling, the daughter of Lord Tan and a renowned opera singer. Liu believes movies offer him a path to wealth and respect in Ling’s eyes. An invitation to showcase their films to the Empress Dowager presents a promising opportunity. But will unforeseen problems arise? And can these new films safeguard tradition amidst a period of rapid change?
