The Other Side (2002)

"The Other Side" is a video installation created for Breakwell's residency at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea during 2000. Filmed on the Pavilion's upper landing, the camera looks out through the stairwell windows towards the sea and horizon. The installation presents two alternating sequences projected on opposite sides of a wall. Footage of elderly couples ballroom dancing on the balcony outside is slowed down to match music by Franz Schubert, combined with sounds of waves and seagulls. The other sequence shows empty panoramic views of the sea and horizon from inside the building, played with the same sound.
