Up at Night (2019)

Opening with a woman describing the lack of electricity in Kinshasa, the film softens the directness of her words through its visual presentation. The accompanying image is initially absent, then duplicated, and sometimes tripled. The filmmaker employs a playful approach, mixing abstract visuals with ambient sounds to create a unique take on documentary filmmaking – an urban symphony. The visual flow mirrors the instability of the power supply, and moments of darkness unexpectedly appear. Images repeat or are combined to form triptychs.
