Description:
In the early 1960s, thousands of Portuguese people fled to France via clandestine routes, escaping poverty, war, and political oppression. Entrusted to dangerous smugglers, they braved a perilous journey across the Iberian Peninsula, pursued by Portuguese and Spanish authorities. For many, the trip to France ended in tragedy. As a child growing up in a slum, the author recalls hearing tales of these harrowing journeys. Thirty years later, he retraces those childhood stories, seeking to understand the driving force behind this massive emigration – the "plebiscite by foot" that opposed Salazar's regime. Blending personal memories with historical research, he uncovers the images of this unprecedented exodus, the largest in post-war Europe.
