Description:
On a farm in the Alps, an older couple raise two children: Belli, who aspires to be a teacher, and Franzi, who is deaf and retains a childlike innocence despite his hard labor. Belli tutors Franzi. Overwhelmed by frustration with his work, Belli throws a valuable mower over a cliff and is banished to the farm's outskirts. There, he spends his time breaking rocks and building walls, a tradition of his father's family known locally as "The Irascibles." Belli visits him, and they begin a sexual relationship. By winter, Franzi returns home, and Belli discovers she is pregnant, forcing them to confront her parents.
