Description:
In September 1992, Scott Panetti was convicted of the capital murder of his parents-in-law in Gillespie County, Texas, and sentenced to death in 1995. Panetti has a long history of severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, hallucinations, and paranoia, and had been hospitalized fourteen times for these conditions before the crime. After his conviction, Panetti's former wife and the victims' daughter, Sonja Alvarado, argued that he was experiencing paranoid delusions at the time of the murders and should not have been put on trial.
