Sleepless Oedo (1993)

Set in the early 18th century, during a time of thriving merchant culture in Edo, the story follows Usugumo, a well-regarded courtesan in Yoshiwara. Unbeknownst to many, she is the daughter of a Christianized prostitute and Tokugawa Yoshimune, the 8th Shogun. Political turmoil prevents her from a relationship with her father, but her life takes a turn when she encounters Kikunosuke, a blond-haired thief. Together with a doctor named Aoto Touichirou, who utilizes Western medicine, and her cat, Kotetsu, Usugumo forms a thief group called the Kikugumi. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure emerges, with designs on Usugumo.
