Description:
The Black Brick Castle relies on poppy seed harvesting, but hardship mounts as shipments are repeatedly intercepted or fail to arrive. Chen Tsao, the castle's owner and a former member of a robbing gang, descends into madness. Despite being surrounded by concubines, he remains childless and forces a worker, Chen Mao, to impregnate one of them to secure an heir. Unlike his father, Chen Tsao's isolation deepens amidst growing poverty and famine outside the castle walls. Meanwhile, Chen Mao develops feelings for a fellow worker, who is married to the abusive Kui Kong and burdened by a superstition that she brings misfortune to him, even as she struggles to care for her two children.
