Description:
This French-German-Dutch film chronicles the life of 17th-century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, unfolding through his recollections in old age. After beginning his career in Amsterdam, he marries the beautiful Saskia and quickly gains recognition. His success allows him to purchase a grand house by teaching wealthy patrons. However, their happiness is tragically cut short when Saskia dies shortly after giving birth to their son, Titus. Grieving, van Rijn finds solace with his maid Geertje and later his second wife, Hendrickje, who bears him a daughter. Despite his artistic brilliance, Rembrandt's unconventional personality alienates the elite who supported him financially. Ultimately, his home and possessions, including many of his paintings, are seized and sold at a humiliatingly low price in a manipulated auction.
