In a fading fishing village, where young people have moved to the city, the older generation remains. Ren, a widow, assists her neighbor, Mrs. Wah, in delivering a gift to her son, Chung, who lives in the city. Ren discovers that Chung is struggling with a difficult life. Unable to confide in anyone in the village, she finds solace only in memories of her late husband. *A Thousand Sails* is a brief story about the sorrowful divide between city and village, mother and son, and life and death. Eric Tsang Hing-weng uses expansive shots and detailed visuals to powerfully showcase the actors, notably Professor Chow Po-chung in his memorable screen debut.
