Experimental Taiwanese (2003)

Mr. Chou, a retired air force officer from Hebei who is now studying Taiwanese, encounters "Chang Jiang No. 1," China's most secretive agent from the Sino-Japanese war, at a Peking opera seminar. Chou's quiet life is suddenly filled with stories of this legendary figure's heroic deeds. "Chang Jiang No. 1," considered by Chou to be the person who contributed most to China, becomes his sole connection to the Moon. The film explores the concept of homesickness through the relationship between Chou and "Chang Jiang No. 1," using a lively pace to examine whether homesickness is genetic, transferable, or even contagious. The director employs humor to portray these new Taiwanese in Taiwan. The film leaves it to the audience to determine if "Chang Jiang No. 1" was a real person.
