Mozart – Idomeneo (2004)

Recorded live from the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, *Idomeneo* tells the story of King Idomeneo of Crete, returning home after years spent during the Trojan War. His son Idamante is ruling in his absence, when Trojan prisoners arrive in Crete, including Ilia, daughter of King Priam. Idamante falls for Ilia, but is also loved by Electra, daughter of Agamemnon, who is seeking refuge in Crete. This production was the directorial debut of Trevor Nunn and has been praised for its powerful drama, which combines elements of Minoan Crete with the refined style of Japanese theatre. John Napier's thoughtful and elegant set designs reflect this dynamic approach. Bernhard Haitink conducts the London Philharmonic in a compelling performance of the music.
