Description:
In a North African country on the cusp of independence, a French diplomat named Julien Rochelle is captivated by the enigmatic Clothilde de Watteville. Their relationship explores the idea that love is often about what we project onto someone. Is Clothilde truly the wife of a French official in Siberia, or something more otherworldly? She remains an ambiguous figure, seemingly detached and observing. Adapted from a novel by Paul Morand, who drew inspiration from his wife, this film creates a dreamlike atmosphere where psychological realism takes a backseat to a sense of magic. The film avoids melodrama, perhaps mirroring Clothilde's own withdrawal from the turmoil she inspires.
