Description:
Le Havre, France, 1949. In a city recovering from war, a group of friends gather at Albert's café. Laurent is unemployed and his marriage to Madeleine is failing. He suspects Madeleine wants to have an affair with their friend, Jean Sauviot, a solitary man drawn to Madeleine but hesitant to pursue her. The day Madeleine reveals her affair to Laurent, he seeks out Jean for answers. He attacks an American sailor resembling Jean on the docks, but the sailor defends himself and flees after accidentally killing Laurent. Madeleine believes Jean is responsible for Laurent's death and plans a new life with him. However, the police suspect otherwise.
