Masao Adachi, a prominent figure in 1960s experimental cinema and pinku-eiga, was once involved with the Japanese New Left, transitioning from filmmaking to guerrilla activism. In 1974, he joined the Japanese Red Army in Lebanon, collaborating with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Filmmaker Lutz Dammbeck met Adachi in Tokyo in 2018 and discussed his life, covering subjects like art, revolution, Western avant-garde and American underground influences, his time with the Japanese Red Army, dealings with secret services, the Left's role after 1968, and the shortcomings of leftist ideologies and tactics.
