Description:
In a Flemish region where flax is the primary crop, farmer Vermeulen dominates his estate with an old-fashioned, stern approach. He dismisses others' opinions, preferring to be wrong than to consider advice. His marriage is built on a bleak acceptance from his wife, Barbele, who tolerates his harshness towards everyone, including their intelligent and handsome son, Louis, the heir. Meanwhile, his two younger sisters receive a frivolous, upper-class education at a nunnery boarding school. Farm life is already difficult due to unpredictable weather and manual labor, but Vermeulen makes it worse by choosing a risky field and planting late, and then receiving a lower price for his harvest even when things go well.
