Description:
Following the abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean in 1834, the East India Company's Calcutta-based firm, Gillanders, Arbuthnot & Company, begins recruiting Indian Coolies to fill the labor shortage. The company hires Sinha, a shrewd salesman, to promise the Coolies a better life with five-year indentured servitude contracts. Upon their arrival in British Guiana in 1838, the British planters immediately impose a new form of forced labor, effectively enslaving the Indian workers to maintain sugar production. A year later, John Scoble of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society arrives to witness this new system of servitude.
