Description:

Fernando Pessoa, a towering figure in Portuguese literature, developed numerous distinct personalities to cope with the isolation of his genius. Nobel Prize winner José Saramago features one of these personalities, Ricardo Reis, who returns to Portugal after 16 years in Brazil. The year is 1936, a turbulent time marked by fascism in Italy, Nazism in Germany, the Spanish Civil War, and Salazar's authoritarian rule in Portugal. It is then that Pessoa encounters Reis. Reis is torn between two women, Lídia and Marcenda, who represent his earthly desires. "Life and Death as One" offers possibilities for both literature and film.
