Description:
Haunted by alcohol, Bill Cannon (Dan Duryea) has lost his job, his family, and his dignity. Shortly after his wife and daughter leave him, he learns his daughter has been in a car accident near Chicago. While waiting for news from his wife, Bill is desperate for the $53 needed to keep his phone line active. He journeys to the streets of Los Angeles, encountering both cruelty and kindness as he searches for a way to get the money. Duryea delivers a nuanced performance, transforming a potentially melodramatic story into a poignant portrait of a broken man. The film offers a rarely seen, unglamorous glimpse of everyday Los Angeles.
