Description:
This drama, produced for Fuji TV's 60th anniversary, adapts Victor Hugo's *Les Misérables* to 1990s Japan. In Kobe, 1993, Jun Baba is imprisoned for killing a man who defrauded his mother. Upon learning his critically ill younger brother is dying, he escapes, only to discover his brother has already passed away. Overwhelmed with despair, Jun attempts suicide but is saved by a man who runs a self-help center. He begins living there and befriends Takumi Watanabe, who dreams of becoming a lawyer. Their friendship is shattered by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995. Trapped under the rubble, Takumi convinces Jun to continue living, and Jun vows to live his life by assuming Takumi's identity.
