"Stories Are Propaganda," by Philippe Parreno and Rirkrit Tiravanija, documents the construction of a new city near Guangzhou, China, for the Guangzhou Biennial. The film presents a series of static shots depicting black factory smoke, waste, writings in the sand, and wind-blown trees. Moving from broad observations of the time to personal reflections, poetic fragments unfold like snapshots: a Chinese magician creating objects at night, a rabbit in a muddy puddle, a mud snowman, a shadow puppet against the moon. Narrated by an unseen child, the film evokes melancholy through its portrayal of the decline of global ideologies.
