Nitsch's art, a blend of ritual and existential themes, gained initial attention in the early 1960s with an exhibition featuring a skinned and mutilated lamb. The lamb was crucified on a white wall, its entrails displayed below a blood-splattered table with hot water. His work is frequently examined alongside society's preoccupation with violence as portrayed in media and entertainment, and its connections to cultural patterns. These evolving performance pieces, termed "actions," have grown increasingly complex over time.
