New Homeland (2018)

In 2017, Canada welcomed 27,000 refugees—nearly as many as the United States—despite having a fraction of the population. Many arrived from Syria and Iraq, enduring difficult journeys to safety. Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple tells their story at Camp Pathfinder, a summer camp on a remote Canadian island that has fostered belonging for boys from Canada and the U.S. for over a century. After being troubled by news of the refugee crisis, the camp director invited refugees to attend. Kopple’s film follows their time at the camp, showcasing the development of new friendships. However, some boys struggle to leave behind the impact of war. Through their experiences, NEW HOMELAND explores the challenges and joys of rebuilding lives.
