The Intimate Duke Ellington (2003)

Duke Ellington had a fifty-year career as a groundbreaking pianist, composer, arranger, and leader of a legendary orchestra. While he occasionally recorded with smaller groups or as a soloist, Ellington was rarely filmed. However, on January 23, 1967, he filmed two programs for Danish television. The first features him playing with an octet from his orchestra, including renowned musicians like Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, and Cat Anderson. Highlights include performances of "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Jam with Sam." The second program showcases Ellington's piano skills in solo and trio settings, featuring pieces like "Lotus Blossom," "Mood Indigo," and a notable rendition of "Take the 'A' Train."
