Description:
Ai Weiwei, known for his massive installations and strong support for social justice, presented a landmark project in 2015 called @Large at Alcatraz. The site is famous for its history of harsh prison conditions and Native American protests. @Large featured portraits of prisoners of conscience and allowed people to send letters of support to those imprisoned. In this moving film, exhibition curator Cheryl Haines speaks with current and former prisoners, including whistleblower Chelsea Manning, to discover how these letters helped them endure. As Ai Weiwei says, “The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned. This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.”
