Description:
In the 1940s, director Howard Hawks confidently declares he can adapt even Ernest Hemingway's weakest work. When pressed for the specific novel, he names *To Have and Have Not*. Jules Furthman writes a script closely following the book, set in Cuba. However, the US government objects to its depiction of corruption and violence, threatening to revoke the film's export license. William Faulkner rewrites the script, moving the story to Martinique. Hawks’s wife, Nancy Slim Gross, notices a young model on the cover of Harper's Bazaar and shows it to him. Hawks, known for discovering and developing talent, casts the 19-year-old model as the lead actress opposite Humphrey Bogart. She renames herself Lauren Bacall. During her first takes, she is so nervous that she shakes.
