Friends in High Places (2001)

In Myanmar, the ancient tradition of nat spirit worship persists despite periods of military rule and the prevalence of Buddhism. Central to this practice are spirit mediums, often men who identify as homosexual, who enter ecstatic states to communicate with the nats and embody their characteristics during elaborate rituals. Director Lindsey Merrison guides viewers through this world, accompanied by two engaging 70-year-olds, to examine the significance of these mediums within Burmese culture in this compelling documentary.
